BEAUTIFUL AND STRANGE

"Clay Blancett’s second novel, Whiteboy, is an exhaust-blurred, Whitman-tongued road epic rendered with a mechanic’s raw hands and a poet’s heat.  Like his first novel, Avenue of Champions, Landscape is a main character, where abandoned farmhouses become roadside monuments to the purely American ruin of racism, addiction, domestic abuse, socioeconomic disparities, and the ever-thinning line between death and life. Sadie Mae and Kit, the main human characters, pull themselves toward life despite the ruin, as if they are inside the same breath and same body at times. They head west through twilights and mornings with hope in their pockets, two wanderers crossing the country in a Toronado like new ghosts learning the shapes of their own shadows. Let us follow them. Let us make love in the backseat parked in a field of fireflies. Let us place milkweed and honeysuckle at the foot of all the white highway crosses, not for the dead, but for the living."
